Day 7 - July 16, 2013

We know a great deal more today about natural disasters than we did in the past.  This has helped our notification process and less people are impacted by the wrath of the disasters than in centuries before.  Choose one natural disaster from the past and show how we have learned from it.  How has this learning helped civilization?

hurricane katrina was one of the most deadliest hurriccanes that we have had and learned from. from this hurricane it taught us how to prepare out self in advance what to do during and the after math of it. now in the 20th century we have a more up to date technology so we are able to track these natural disasters.

  2. The earthquake in Haiti was one of the greatest earthquakes that has occurred in the 2000's, we learned from this natural disaster by looking out for early warning signs from the seismographs. Areas prone to earthquakes had updated their buildings some locations reconstructed their buildings in a way that when an earthquake happens it will move in a swaying motion.

  3. The last natural disaster I can remember was Hurricane Sandy. I remember Hurricane Sandy destroyed allot of the houses that were near water. My cousin Dordrina's house in Far Rockaway got flooded and was of allot seaweed out there. Hurricane Sandy was a category 3 Hurricane that was dangerous and it caused allot of damage. This hurricane helped teached our civilization allot of things. It helped teach us to be aware of other people like helping seniors and children during disasters. It also taught us how to be more prepared for dangerous storms to come.

  4. The 1931 Central China floods were a series of floods that occurred in China. The floods are considered among the deadliest natural disasters to ever happen. The weather in china has always been very unpredictable. After the floods many organizations were set up not only to help everyone suffering from the flood, but also to teach people how to prepare in case of anymore floods. The dike was rebuilt, shelters were built for those who lost there home. And now that China has experienced such a huge disaster, they now know what to do in case of another flood. They are now prepared.

  5. A natural disaster that occurred in the past, that I remember is the Tsunami in Japan. This natural disaster thought us that tsunami's can take place any time and any where. We just have to be ready. It helped civilization, because now people are preparing for the worst to come

One Natrual disaster in the pass that is well known is that Typhoon in the Philippines — Tropical Storm Washi might be the most under-covered natural disaster of 2011, and it just happened. The storm first made landfall on Dec. 16 over Mindanao, th So far more than 1,200 people have been reported killed as a result, and that number is expected to rise. More than half a million people have lost their homes, according to government officials in the Philippines. This made a big impact to other people because alot of people had to evacuate from were they live and change everything get new jobs rejester there kids to a new school and replace everything that has beeen lost or damaged.(globalpost.com)

  8. A major natural disaster that taught us was the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. This began as an earthquake underwater on the coast of Japan on March 11,2011. This earthquake, which moved the main island of Japan 8ft east and shifted the earths axis 4-10 in, then caused a tsunami which had waves up to 133ft and traveled 6 miles. The tsunami then caused nuclear incidents which caused the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of the towns population. After such a disaster the United States immediately began to evacuate their pacific coastal areas for a tsunami warning. We have learn from this by looking at the other outcomes of the situation. When we reacted to the first earthquake warning we were able to protect our people from a tsunami that was 8ft high.

  9. One major natural disaster was Cyclone Nargis in 2008 in Myanmar. It crossed the southern region of the country of a time period of two days. It killed 84,500 people and caused 53,800 people to go missing, the UN estimated that close to 2.4 million people were affected by this cyclone. Countries spend billions of dollars in repairs and recovery after every natural disaster no matter what country it is or what natural disaster it is, Myanmar was no different. Myanmar Red Cross organized a three-year Cyclone Nargis relief and recovery operation. Every country wishes to be able to prevent a natural disaster, such as a cyclone, from occurring but as of today that is impossible; but what we can do is find ways to increase warning time. People of Myanmar did exactly that. Over four thousand people were trained in disaster risk management. They were provided with loud speaks, that serve as their warning equipment.

Hurricane sandy was a hurricane that really taught us a lesson. Normally in new York we don’t really have bad hurricanes and we never really take them too serious. After hurricane sandy we’ve learned to actually prepare and evacuate, when we’re warned too. To prevent future devastation as bad as we’ve had, scientists have came together and brought even more advanced technology that can tell not just us but the whole world when a hurricane is coming, and how long they have to evacuate. The equipment they have brought up after the hurricane, can not only tell us how far it is, or where its coming from, but how bad its going to be and what to expect. We’ve also learned what safety precautions to take in making sure you and you’re family get away and are safe from the storm, its impossible to not get alerted now of how much risk you’re in, because now people get texts, you can hear it on the radio, the news, and even a friend or family member. We’ve learned so much and advanced so many things since then, and I’m sure we’ll be learning more and keep advancing our technology.

Hurricane Sandy was a natural disaster that occured in 2012 its major toll that it placed on us taught us a huge lesson. New York citizens are not really occustom to storms as bad as sandy was. We've had plenty of storms hit us but the damage it placed upon new york was so great many homes we destroyed and there were alot of casualties. We've learn to expect the unexpected & we've also prepaired our homes with emergency kits just in case another hurricane or something worst hits.

  12. Hurricane Katrina was one major disaster that we all learned from. it taught us how to prepare for any disaster such as itself and even hurricane Sandy which took place in 2012. Both were major disasters all over the world that people today may still have to recover from (hurricane Sandy)

One major disaster I can remember from the past is the earthquake in Hati. We have learned from this disaster to be more cautious about where we live and to know our surroundings and what things may be around us that can dramatically affect us. Also, we learn how much damage can occur in that area so we know how strong it can be in the future.

Although it wasn't that long ago, I think hurricane sandy taught us a great load. Hurricane sandy showed that just because we think something can't happen where we live it still can. Sandy opened our eyes about natural disasters. When we heard a hurricane was heading our way, we all thought it was just going to be a little rain. Many people didn't evacuate their homes when they were told to. We realized we need to take warnings seriously. Sandy made us realize our emergency systems need to improve. Now if there was another hurricane warning, people would take more precautions. They would try to stay safe and be prepared. Sometimes it takes something bad I happen before we realize how bad a natural disaster can really be.

  16. A natural disaster which many people had most likely learned from is Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina was known to be the third largest and strongest hurricane to be recorded in the history of United States. It killed approximately 1,900 people and about 700 people are still reported missing since the hurricane. From this disaster, we have learned to gain more knowledge about our geographical surroundings, and always be cautious and ready incase something occurs unexpectedly. We have also took on little things such as having a back up generator, extra storage and having people to go to for help in case of an emergency.

  17. I say the only natural disasters if every experienced was hurricane Irene and sandy. Sandy was much worse than Irene. I must say it did do a lot of damage and A lot of people weren't prepared. The gas situation was horrible afterwards , no one had gas and the lines were crazy. Although we were warned , people still didn't take it as serious. Now everyone should start taking these more serious.

Natural Disasters have been happening since the earth was created. It all happens because of the climate change in the earth’s atmosphere. Since then, the planet has have massive earthquakes, Landslides, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, and Tsunami’s, but all these rarely happen often back then. But now, since Global Warming got out of hand, things got a lot worst. During these events, we learn from our mistakes to make shore that these do not happen in the future. These disasters can kill over a million people that happen to be caught in these disasters. So it’s important to know about these things so the next time it comes up again, we will be prepared. One of these disasters we learned from was earthquake that hit Haiti; we figured it was on top of a major fault line. The magnitude was of 7.0 which was the equal force of 30 megaton bombs. Haiti wasn't financially prepared or equipped for it and that was there mistake. From this we took every precautions to make shore that this time, we will be ready for it.

  19. Natural disasters we have experienced were Hurricane sandy and before that was hurricane Irene in New York. These hurricanes have caused many deaths because of flooding and people houses has been ripped apart. Hurricane sandy which occurred last year was a Catgory 3 hurricane which only floods and rips away housing because the speed of it. We learned from it because now we know the impact of a hurricane and how much it affects our community and I feel that helps us because next time we will be more prepared

The 1931 Central China floods or the Central China floods of 1931 were a series of floods that occurred in the Republic of China. The floods are generally considered among the deadliest natural disasters ever recorded, and almost certainly the deadliest of the 20th century (when pandemics and famines are discounted). Estimates of the total death toll range from 145,000[1] to between 3.7 million and 4 million. In the wake of the disaster, the Nationalist government set up organisations such as the Huai River Conservancy Commission to address flood problems. However, due to a lack of funding and the chaos of the Second Sino-Japanese War and the subsequent Chinese Civil War, the various commissions were only able to construct small dams along the Yangtze River.

a recent natural disaster that occurred was the earthquake in japan on march 11th 2011. this earthquake had a magnitude of 8.9. this earthquake was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. but this wasnt the only natural disaster that occurred that day. the earthquake triggered a tsunami to form and caused the most lasting damage. the tsunami reached up to 30 feet high and traveled more than 3 miles inland. more than 15,000 people were killed in total this day. we have learned that anything can happen and we have to be ready for it. im not saying live in fear constantly and not living your life because you think something is going to happen. i mean at least have a plan of where you are going to go or what you need to buy. after each natural disaster the human race learns more. maybe if more people start having plans and stop global warming then less lives will be taken away. this learning helped civilization because now we know things can happen anywhere and sometimes your area might be the worse of them all. that number of deaths should at least push people to gain knowledge about the area they are living in and how to prepare for natural disasters

storms in the united states was a serious natural disaster. the us has a combination of unusual and severe weather events that in total caused the country 35 billion dollars in damages and killed more than 700 people. a number of tornadoes, flooding, blizzard and drought have all combines to at times cripple regions of the US. we have learned the outcome of all these natural disasters so we know how to prepare for them the next time one appears. weve also learned that even though we may be the reason for these natural disasters... well they come naturally. this learning helped civilization because now we know what we need where we need to go and what we need to do in order to stay safe and alive

Well I think a favorite for me would have to be hurricane sandy because it showed people the true danger of a natural disaster. The majority of America has some distrust about our government and they heave good reason for it. But when it comes to something as serious as this theirs no excuse for what happened there. People decided to play Russian roulette with a hurricane and many of them lost their lives because of it. Now I’m not saying that they were suicidal but the world can take a book full of notes on how that disaster could have only been a monetary loss instead of the waste of human life.

  26. We have learned a lot from hurricane Katrina. It cost us more than any other natural disaster and the damage was devastating. But it made us aware of the other natural disasters that can come. We now can build man made structures stronger and now we know to evacuate when a big storm like Katrina arrives

A natural disaster that has occurred that we can learn from would be Hurricane Sandy. Hurricane Sandy destroyed many houses along the ocean side where is majority in long island and new jersey. It got so bad that the red cross had to come in a they made a foundation, also that is was on the tv everywhere and still is. The hurricane destroyed majority of peoples homes, property, land, items, etc. Just because it was the closes to the water. The fact that the hurricane did so much was a disaster. People were going crazy looking for gas, food, and other safety items. But now we are all pitching in to help those in need, its the right thing to do. We have learned from this to always be prepared and show our appreciation toward everything. This has helped the civilization because we came together to help people rebuild there homes because there are people, one country and one big family.

in my eyes I think the most eye opening natural disaster is when super storm sandy hit new York. it was eye opening because saw fist hand what it did to homes on the water. it took away a lot and I feel that natural disasters like that has helped civilization by reminding us to stick together because alone we would all die and also to stay farther fro the coast so when it happens again it wont be as bad

  30. Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans was a devastating natural disaster. It caused about $81 million for property damage. Also, at least 1,833 died from the hurricane. We learned many things from this disaster and hope to take more precautions if another hurricane of this category happens again. Many people died of Katrina because they didn't heed the hurricane warnings.

  31. What I think is the most devastating disaster I have been through recently is hurricane sandy . I think this is the most dangerous because there a lot of flooding and a lot people didnt have electricity . We have been warned and people have evacuated but also people have been injured and not helped because they have been in a situation that people can't not even been helped. When electricity went out people had no way of getting gas having no school work to get done. We have had it hard but we got through it. When we get through and be prepared we will be ready for what's coming .

  32. from the information from the graph we have learned mostly about earthquakes we have a lower death toll in that category than any other natural disasters. we learned to make buildings that work around earthquakes and have warning zones that stop people from living in them. learning helps us adapt to the environment and hel

  33. There have been many terrible disasters that have occurred for the past decades. One of them in particular is Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina is located in New Orleans, Lousisiana. This hurricane taught all citizens to listen to warnings when its being given. Hurricane Katrina's storm also showed people they have to be prepared when a storm is about to hit. At this time, people are still recovering and they have nothing. All because they didn't listen to that one warning.

  34. One devastating natural disaster from the past was hurricane katrina that started from florida but did a great amount of damage in New Orleans. This hurricane flooded the streets of New Orleans. It left many dead and homeless. It was a struggle for many as well. Me as a person and us as the United States have learned that you cant take these things for granted. Natural disasters can occur anywhere. They take place where ever and when ever. We have learned to be prepared ahead of time. We have mor advanced technology which helps us keep in contact with different natural disasters .

  35. With the case of hurricanes, we have learned a lot from them. Over the pas hundred years or so, we have been able to significantly decrease the death toll of a hurricane. In the past we weren’t able to know what storm was a hurricane and what wasn't. Resulting in people dying because people thought it was a regular storm. But learning about hurricanes now has greatly helped civilization. Now we can evacuate people if we need to, tell people how hard it’s going to hit, tell them where it’s going to hit, all this saves lives that couldn’t be saved before.

  36. One disaster from the past that we have learned from is of course, hurricane sandy. we learned from sandy how to prepare better for another disaster. I think residents of the tri-state area did not take Sandy seriously because o a previous hurricane, Hurricane Irene. When hurricane Irene came through, she did not leave as much damage as sandy. after Sandy, i think that now if we here that a hurricane is coming we will prepare better. Stock up more on food, have an emergency bag packed, and have better insurance.

  37. A disaster from the past that we learned from was hurricane sandy. Sandy destroyed the tri-state area and people was not prepared for it because they thought it wasn't going to be anything serious. This hurricane help civilization by having people now believe in preparing for a hurricane in New York

  38. china floods is something we can learn from, because back then the technology to detect or know when floods were coming were not available so the warning for all those people that dies never got out. but today that technology is available to warn people so more lives can be saved :D.

  39. a disaster would be hurricane sandy . as i said previously . people weren't expecting it to be so destructive. there was a lot of damage done. even though we were warned , we didnt believe it would be that crucial to our communities. now that we experienced that. for further warnings people will be extra prepared.
